MAPP Class: Session 7
MAPP CLASS
Our MAPP class last Thursday was really good. Our caseworker, Lindsey, who usually does the classes, was at the hospital with a birth mom and adoptive family so we got a caseworker from the Orlando office who came and taught and it was really a wonderful class. (Even though we missed Lindsey, it was neat to get another perspective.) While most classes we've attended focused on both adoption and foster care or some classes mostly about foster care, this class mainly focused on adoption and what to expect, what kind of contact do you want to keep with the mother (if any at all) after the baby is born, even on how to deal with others opinions that we don't necessarily agree with concerning adoption. It was truly an eye-opening class and as we were coming home Justin and I were able to really discuss how we want to deal with several issues that we will have to face somewhere along the way. Something else we talked about was writing our birth mother letter which will be included in our scrapbook. We will turn in our rough draft tonight and revise it as needed along the way until it's exactly the way we want it (and follows all guidelines through the Florida Baptist Children's Home). It was a letter that I thought might be fairly easy to write (or maybe I was just in denial) but it turned out to be one of the hardest letters to do. What do you tell this lady who wants to know all about your family? She wants the best possible home for her child to grow-up in. She wants to know that the family she is giving this baby to will have security (both financially and physically), that her baby will grow-up in a home that will love and adore him/her just like their own, a family who sits down to have dinner together despite their busy schedules, parents who would go to the moon and back to provide the best home for this sweet baby. Talk about a lot of pressure. And what do you say to someone who so strong and courageous and is making one of the most difficult decisions of her life so that her child can have a better life than she could give? Between Justin and myself we composed a letter, and it may have to be changed up a little after our caseworker reads it, but everything that was said came straight from our hearts to hers. Once we get our final draft done, I plan on sharing it in a blog.
SCRAPBOOKWe're almost done!! I literally have 2 (maybe 3) pages left to do! It feels good to have it almost done, especially with the holidays right around the corner. One thing I've done while making is I've prayed over each page while putting it together. I know that our future little ones mom will be looking at this book and I just want her to see that a lot of love and time went into making it special. I pray that God will use this scrapbook in a great way as her eyes pour over the pages of our life together as a family. Can't wait to share it with you all!
I think that about covers it for last Thursday! I'm looking forward to our class tonight as we start wrapping it all up! Thank you for taking the time to read our blog and thank you even more for your prayers. We know that God totally has His hands on this whole process!

MAPP Class: Sessions 4-6
We had quite the busy week with our classes last week! We are over half-way done with our classes and only have four left! It's crazy how quick this is going so far! Thursday was our 4th session which focused on attachments. It was a really great class, but turned out to be a lot more emotional than we had anticipated. Through this class we participated in what was called a "visual imagery" which gave us an extremely small glimpse into what a foster child goes through when being taken away from their home. Once again, we have learned a wealth of information on foster care and adoption and what these children go through. My heart left once again, broken and heavy-burdened for this great need. But as I reflect back, I can see God changing and molding my heart in many different ways. Saturday was a combined class, session 5 and 6, and both sessions focused on parenting styles and discipline. I must say, I came out learning A LOT!! And plan on implementing a lot of what we learned even now with Emilee. There are many things which were brought up that I had never really thought about before. It was a very interesting class and both Justin and myself really enjoyed it.
ORPHAN SUNDAY
We had a small opportunity to share about adoption at our church today. Justin and our pastor do our children sermons in the morning service and today was Justin's turn which happened to also be "Orphan Sunday." We brought our scrapbook (what we have done) and showed the kids when they came down front and talked about what it means to be adopted and how God adopted us. Justin also found a really powerful video about Orphan Sunday to show to the children and our adults. It was a very special time to share with our congregation and the children about how God has led our family to this awesome and exciting time in our lives. Below is a picture of us sharing with the children in the morning service.
SCRAPBOOK
The scrapbook is coming along. I'm really hoping to have it done by the time the holidays hit so we'll see how that works out. With coming to the end of a busy semester along with holiday activities I'm not sure if it will happen that way but I'll get it done soon. I think I have about 8-10 pages left and it should be completed! Can't wait to have it done! It's really coming together nicely.
Thank you all again for your continued prayers through this awesome process. Your prayers are felt and God is continuing to work in our hearts and our lives. We can't wait to meet the special little boy or girl that He has planned for us and knows will be coming into our family soon. We know that His timing is absolutely perfect!

Letter to our future little one...
Dear Little One,
Welcome to this world! We have been praying for you for a long time and now you have arrived. Our family is truly excited to meet you for the first time. We truly believe that God has blessed us with you and we can’t wait to have you come home with us and join our family.
What’s that? You wonder what our home (your new home) is like? Well, let us tell you about it…
Our town:
We live in a small town in Florida where almost everyone knows everyone and all the different people are really kind. This is a generous town with some great schools and businesses, and you can tell everyone cares about the children and youth in this area. This is a great place to raise a family.
Our church:
We attend a medium size church in this town. It has a lot of little ones in it, and all the families are really nice. We actually work at the church, helping with the children and the teenagers. We love it and we know you will fit right in.
Our home:
We live in a big house with lots of space to play. We even have a play room! We have a little girl who has way too many toys… You’ll love it. We love to watch movies, play board games, play video games, and learn new things on the computer. We know you will enjoy all these things in our fun house!
Mommy and Daddy:
Summer (mom) is a stay-at-home mom who is also trying to finish her college work to become a teacher. She keeps the house clean and exciting. She loves little kids and loves to “spoil” them. Bet you can’t wait! Justin (dad) is just plain crazy. He’s always singing and dancing around the house. That’s probably why he makes a great youth pastor at our church. He’s going to teach you some really entertaining and funny things, we’re sure. They love each other, their families, and they will love you (just like their own).
Emilee and Bella:
Emilee (your big sis) is 5 years old and is now in Kindergarten. She loves school, she loves art, she loves playing outdoors, and she loves music. This all makes for an energetic and fun-loving little girl. She can’t wait to help take care of you. She also loves Bella, our golden retriever. We’ll admit, she’s a pretty big dog for only 2 years old, but she loves having fun, playing with kids, and being loved on. She’ll love you too!
We hope this letter lets you know a little more about us and what’s in store when God brings you to our home. Again, we can’t wait to meet you. We love you already!
See you soon, Justin, Summer, Emilee, and Bella

MAPP Class: Week Three
I'll probably find myself saying this as we go through each week but I would have to say that our class this past Thursday was one of the most eye opening classes we've had yet. The topic: Becoming a Loss Expert. We talked a lot about grieving and behaviors that you might see in children that are in foster care and why they have some of the behaviors they do. And while this was the main subject and while we learned how to help children or youth cope with the different stages of grieve we were challenged to revisit and face some of the losses we may of had in our owns lives so that we can better help a child who has faced a loss or even multiple losses. And these losses could range anywhere from losing a loved one, to divorce, to an unexpected illness, to inferility, to miscarriages, to car accidents and to even being abandoned as a child. It turned out to be a bit of an emotional night as one guy shared about his dad being in a car accident almost two years ago and how he dealt with that, another lady shared about her father being diagnosed with cancer, while another lady shared about a pastor she had known all her life in the church she grew up in and after 25 years just up and left and how it really broke her faith apart in many ways...loss can come in many shapes and forms but it's how we deal with it, it's how we process it and it's the things we gain in those losses that shape us to be who God wants us to be and it's those losses and gains that shape us into the parent that we will be to our children and even in our case, the leaders we will be to our students. It was a great class and we walked away gaining a lot more knowledge about children who experience loss. Even through these classes I find myself striving to be a better mom to Emilee. Striving to be more patient with her and striving to always let her know she is loved. While I've always wanted to be the best parent that I can to my child, this class has really challenged me to be the best mom and best role model I could possibly be. Hearing some of these children's stories has literally taken my heart and broke it into a million pieces and all I want to do after that is come home and just hold my sweet child and let her know how loved and what a precious gift she is to me and her daddy.
Scrapbook
The scrapbook is coming along! I think I'm about at the halfway mark with it. I've finished 13 out of 29 pages that will be in it so I'm really hoping by the time the holidays hit I will be finished. Between school, adoption classes/homework, church stuff and just every day life I'm trying to squeeze in as much time as I can with it and so far have been pretty successful in doing that. As promised in the last blog, I said I would post a couple of sneak peek pictures of a couple of the pages so here they are!
This is the first page in our scrapbook of our family. Lisa Stockton, with Stockton Photography, came to the house and took a few shots of us. She did an excellent job and we appreciate her so very much!! There were definitely some great pictures to put in our scrapbook!
Last but not least, my work station! Although I've loved putting this scrapbook togehter I'm looking foward to having my table back! Luckily we haven't had any company to where we'd need to use this table!
I guess that about sums it up for now! Later on in the week I'll post our letter to the baby that we had to write and turn it. Justin wrote most of it and it is simply precious. Can't wait to share it with you! Thank you all for your continued prayers! God is working in our hearts and lives daily and we can't wait to continue to see how all of this unfolds...especially after the holidays end and we get closer to getting a new addition to our family!
Blessings!!

MAPP Class: Week Two
While this is only our second week in class, and while this is an adoption/foster care class, I believe that this would be an excellent class for any parent with children to take. I truly believe that these classes are not only going to help us in preparing our home for our future child, but they are going to help us to become better parents to the child that we care for and nurture daily right now.
I've really been working hard in getting our scrapbook done and maybe next week I'll be able to share a little "sneak peek" at a couple of our pages. So far I've completed 9 pages with several more to go. It's really starting to come together and I can't wait to see the finished product. In class last night, we turned in our "family profile" and with our family profile we had to turn in a page that Emilee had to draw and color, a floor plan of our house, pictures of our house as well as a letter to the baby (later on we will have to write a letter to the birth mom). Justin did most of the writing (I threw my thoughts in) but he did a lovely job of putting it together and writing the perfect letter about our family, town and church family to our soon-to-be little one. I may have to share it one day as a blog.
I think all of this just about sums up our class, as well as the progress on our scrapbook and family profile. We're really looking forward to next week and I'm looking forward to continuing to share in our journey with you...

And the journey begins...
The second thing we're currently working on is our "Adoption Profile Scrapbook" which is composed of pictures of our family which will include several family pictures, different activities we like to do, pictures of our parents and siblings, a few pictures of Justin and I growing up as well as a few pictures from our wedding. This scrapbook will be shown to potential birth moms who then decide if they're "interested" in knowing more about our family and will then set up and interview process with us and if she likes us and feels comfortable with us then we go from there and form a plan as far as if we'll be in the delivery room when she gives birth and many other important details which go into the "birthing" plan.
All in all, we're super excited. We have a long journey ahead of us...we're not completely sure what all this journey is going to hold as far as bumps we may hit in the road but one things for sure...at the end of the road will be the perfect baby that God has intended for our family. We're already praying for this child and this birthmom...I don't have any clue what this baby is going to look like, or when he/she is going to be born but what I do know is that God is already forming him/her and making this child perfect for our family.
